The Issue Of Gender Related Violence - 2883 Words

In regards to the issue of gender-related violence, the literature might suggest two possible approaches. One is that the incidence of violence against women could be reduced by way of a stronger state. The second is that the incidence of violence against women is best addressed with greater representation and leadership by women. This paper will examine both of these arguments. It will conclude that neither explanation has the potential to resolve issues of gendered violence independently. The combination of a strong state and adequate female representation in parliament will decrease the prevalence of violence against women. Central to this paper will be the debate over which influence, either socialization or biology, can account for a higher number of male perpetrators of violence. Strong State For realists, the only potential to decrease the prevalence of violence against women is by means of strengthening the state. Jeffrey Herbst pinpoints state weakness as the source of conflict in African countries (2000, p. 287). While he does not explicitly refer to the violent conflict involving women, Herbst describes the necessity of strengthening the state to bring conflict to a halt (2000, p. 287). Fellow realists Barry R. Posen and Seth Jones have drawn similar conclusions on resolving conflict with the strengthening of the state.
